As part of South Asian Heritage Month, UH Arts + Culture is delighted to support Third Space – a platform for South Asian poetry.
British South Asian poetry is thriving – but remains underrepresented in mainstream publishing, poetry courses, and literary organisations. Third Space was founded by poet and artist Suman Gujral with an eye on filling this gap.
Watch the video below to hear Suman talk about the project:
With support from Arts Council England, Third Space launched during South Asian Heritage Month 2024 with an anthology and a series of events. The project creates a platform to showcase and celebrate South Asian poetry, aiming to support emerging voices, connect established poets, and inspire a new generation of writers.
In partnership with award-winning independent publisher Renard Press, an open call in April 2024 led to the first anthology’s release in July 2024. A second call followed in March 2025 for a forthcoming volume, Remembrance, due in August 2025.

Events have been hosted in collaboration with venues including St Albans Museum + Gallery, Harlow Arts Trust, and the Portico Library in Manchester. For upcoming event details, please visit: thirdspacestories.com
Looking ahead, Third Space remains committed to supporting both new and established South Asian poets in the UK – offering platforms, resources, and opportunities to help poets grow and share their work widely.

About Suman Gujral
Suman Gujral is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist working across print, textiles, and poetry. She holds an MA in Fine Art from the University of Hertfordshire (2018), and her work is held in collections at both the University of Hertfordshire and the Whitworth Art Gallery. She has performed readings at institutions including the Horniman and the Whitworth.
A child of refugees and immigrants, Gujral’s practice is rooted in themes of displacement, colonialism, and survival. Her work centres on community, inclusivity, compassion and joy, and explores the human capacity to endure and flourish after trauma. She believes art should be woven into everyday life rather than confined to a white-space experience.
