We present Rossini, Haydn & Brahms in traditional concert format. We begin with Rossini’s Barber of Seville Overture, originally composed in just 12 days for a different opera. Joseph Haydn’s ever popular Cello Concerto number 1 in C follows, written in the 1760s and then lost until the 1960s when a copy of the score was discovered in the Prague National Museum! The soloist will be our very own principal cellist Tim Steggals, more usually seen leading the de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra cello section.

The second half of the concert will comprise Brahms’ mighty First Symphony, fourteen years in the making. The lengthy genesis may have been in part because Brahms felt the weight of the public’s expectation that he would continue the inheritance of fellow German composer Beethoven – definitely a hard musical act to follow. However Brahms need not have worried and his First Symphony is established as a wonderful symphony and one which we are certain you will all enjoy.
