UH Arts + Culture are thrilled to invite you to join artist and poet Suman Gujral for a special workshop combining storytelling and textile art.
In this 2-hour workshop you will get the chance hear Suman talk about her own creative practice and how her family history has inspired her work. She will then guide you to create a unique piece of textile art to take away with you.
The workshop will encourage you to reflect on your own history and heritage, and using a variety of embroidery materials, sew a unique embroidered artwork for yourself.
No previous experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided. Booking is essential to secure your place as this event has limited capacity.
Suman Gujral is an award-winning British-Indian artist and poet who explores her heritage and family history through poetry, stitch and print. Community Engagement is central to Gujral’s practice, and this workshop is inspired by her late mother, Trilochan Kaur. Trilochan Kaur gave her daughter sheets and tablecloths that she had embroidered with her own mother, by candlelight, after the 1947 Partition of India. These embroideries travelled from India to the UK in 1965, when the family settled here. In her artistic practice, Suman Gujral reflects on how we hold on to our history and heritage through family objects.
Gujral holds an MA in Fine Art from the University of Hertfordshire (2018). Her work is held in the University of Hertfordshire and Whitworth Art Gallery collections, and she has read at several UK institutions, including the Horniman and Whitworth. In 2024, she founded Third Space, a platform for South Asian poets and stories from the South Asian Diaspora, with funding from the Arts Council.
We look forward to welcoming you to this special event!
